Dick Barta
Dick Barta's lifelong dedication to music and education is a testament to his passion and commitment. His journey began with an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Mayville State College in North Dakota. He continued his academic pursuits with graduate studies at the University of Michigan and the University of Kansas, earning graduate degrees in Music Education and Education Administration.
Throughout his career, Dick excelled in performance, showcasing his talent with various ensembles, including Mayville State College, 5th and 8th Army Bands, the University of Michigan, and the University of Kansas. For 28 years, he served as a clarinet professor at Eastern Illinois University, contributing through numerous solo performances.
Teaching was a significant part of Dick's life, including seven years in public schools and 28 years at Eastern Illinois University. He made an enduring impact on students and the field of music education.
Dick's 25-year tenure as the director of the Westminster Choir at First Presbyterian Church, Mattoon, is another highlight. His dedication to this choir and the congregation has left a lasting legacy.
First Presbyterian Church holds a special place in Dick's heart. When he moved to Charleston for his career at Eastern Illinois University, he found his church home at First Presbyterian. The pastor, congregation, music program, and Christian education offerings perfectly aligned with his needs and values. For 43 years, he had the privilege of directing a cherished group of 17 individuals at the church.
