Dr. Byungjin Kim
BJ (Byungjin) hails from Seoul, South Korea. He pursued his academic journey at Hanyang University in Seoul, followed by The New School in New York City. Further advancing his passion for music, he achieved his doctorate in composition from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
As a seasoned church musician, BJ has accrued significant experience in the gospel arts, leading worship sessions across generations and diverse groups. His tenure in Seoul, New York, and Illinois witnessed him take on the role of a music director at various churches. Here, he fostered unity and a team spirit among choir members from diverse backgrounds, all while echoing praises to God. His collaborations extend to college students, with whom he has explored myriad worship music styles. He also directed musical summer camps for children, aged 7-12, introducing them to the beauty of music fused with worship. By the calling of God, BJ currently serves the First Presbyterian Church of Mattoon as an Organist and Pianist.
As a prolific contemporary music composer, BJ's compositions span a variety of genres. With music experience across South Korea, Germany, Austria, New York, Illinois, among others, he brings novel and invigorating perspectives to his work. Notably, his recent scholarly endeavor focused on "hybridization"—the art of crafting new cultural forms from the amalgamation of diverse cultural elements. This work embraces interdisciplinary collaboration, merging regional, cultural, and historical facets to create unique musical signatures. His musical prowess led to a collaboration with the New York Philharmonic, where he crafted musical arrangements for songs from West Side Story, showcased at their Central Park concert.
Outside of his professional sphere, BJ is a keen movie enthusiast. He enjoys not only watching movies but also engaging in thought-provoking discussions with family and friends post-viewing. His reflections on the movie "Life of Pi" deepened his insights on the nature of human belief.
In the vibrant city of New York City, BJ's life was further enriched upon meeting his lovely wife, EJ (Eunjoo) Chung. Together, they welcomed two beautiful children into their lives, Dana and Hajun. Family moments are especially cherished, often accompanied by gospel and K-pop tunes, reflecting BJ's musical inclinations.
At the heart of BJ's endeavors is a commitment to enriching spiritual connections through music. His belief is steadfast: music in worship fortifies our bond with God and strengthens the church in its faith. Grounded in responsibility and organization, BJ finds profound joy in collaborating with varied groups, all bound together in the love of Jesus.
